About Margaret
I'm a wildlife biologist with over 20 years experience in wildlife and zoological sciences both in the field and with captive animals in conservation programs. I hold a MSc in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology from the University of Colorado at Fort Collins. My current interest is amphibians affected by the chytrid fungus outbreak in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but also have experience working on conservation and biological issues such as habitat connectivity, human-wildlife conflict, biological monitoring, habitat restoration and ecotoxicology. Mentoring young people is one of my most enjoyable tasks. While working with the Oakland Zoo I started the first college-credit internship in coordination with the ecology department at CSUEB. I taught hands on skills, assigned and discussed relevant reading material and ensured that interns completed the required number of hours to receive credits. My students and mentees have gone on to become wildlife biologists, veterinarians, and zoo keepers among other biological professions. Some have gone on to PhD programs and have even won National Science Foundation grants for their own research.

I base my classes and tutoring on my students' needs and interests. Each student is unique and learns differently, so I adjust my teaching methods to accommodate the student. A combination of lecture, assignments, and hands on experience with timely and constructive feedback is important to learning. For tutoring, specific requests for learning topics and styles will be considered and accommodated whenever possible. The most important thing is for my students to understand the mechanisms and concepts of biology and gain an appreciation for the natural world around us.
