About Gannon
In today's fast-paced and competitively driven academic landscape, the role of a tutor has become more significant than ever. Students, often overwhelmed by the pressures of coursework, exams, and extracurricular commitments, seek guidance to help them navigate their educational journey. As a tutor, establishing professionalism is not just a matter of personal pride in my opinion; it is essential for inspiring confidence and legitimizing your role in the eyes of the students you serve. First impressions matter. As your tutor, my demeanor, appearance, and communication style all contribute to the initial perception of my professionalism. I will arrive on time, dressed appropriately, and will always maintain a friendly yet respectful tone. It’s crucial to create an environment where students feel safe and supported, but also recognize that they are in the presence of someone who takes their role seriously. An essential element of professionalism is effective communication. I will be clear from the beginning about my teaching methods, expectations, and goals building a transparent relationship with students. This clarity can alleviate anxiety, as students know what to expect and how to measure their progress. I do encourage questions, listen actively, and provide constructive feedback. By fostering open lines of communication, students will feel valued and understood, cultivating a strong tutor-student rapport. Legitimacy as a tutor stems largely from qualifications and experience. I have 16 years experience in the English classroom ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 12, remedial courses, as well as Advanced Placement courses. I was invited to speak at a conference in Chicago which pertained to working with students below the national reading average and how to get their scores on or above grade level. I was invited to speak at this conference for 3 years in a row in which ended up being a great success all 3 years. I also was invited to a conference in San Francisco and spoke on the same topic for 2 years in a row. Not only have I taught in the English classroom, but I have also taught drama, journalism, and oral communications. I'm experienced in working with students with grammar, test preparation, understanding literature, as well as remedial reading. I've worked with students in preparing thesis statements as well as complete essay writing. I have taught everything from Charles Dickens to Shakespeare to Amy Tan and even Twilight. I have taught in both the public and private school sectors, as well worked with students on all levels, meeting that student where he/she was to have the most impact on his or her learning. Just as I encourage my students to grow and learn, it’s vital for myself to commit to ongoing professional development. I attend workshops, participate in online courses, and engage with professional organizations related to education and tutoring. I am dedicated to enhancing my skills and staying updated on teaching trends and methodologies. I will establish a structured learning environment, enhancing professionalism and instilling confidence in students. I will set clear objectives for each session and outline the topics to be covered. I will make use of syllabi when appropriate, lesson plans, and assessment tools to create a framework that guides the learning process. As I believe feedback is a mutual responsibility between tutors and students, providing regular and constructive feedback helps students understand their strengths and areas for improvement, fostering a growth mindset. Likewise, inviting students to reflect on their learning experiences and share feedback about my tutoring methods can lead to adjustments that enhance effectiveness. This collaborative approach not only boosts students' confidence in their abilities but also reinforces their trust in my abilities as a tutor. role as a tutor.

Choosing the right teacher can profoundly impact your journey as a student. As an experienced English and writing teacher with over 15 years of classroom experience, I want to take a moment to share why I would be an excellent choice for your educational experience. My passion for literature, writing, and effective communication, combined with my engaging teaching style and commitment to student success, makes me the ideal guide on your journey through the world of English and writing.
One of the key reasons you would want me as your teacher is my commitment to creating an engaging and dynamic classroom environment. I strongly believe that learning should be both fun and meaningful. In my classroom, you won’t just read textbooks; you will participate in vibrant discussions, collaborate with peers on creative projects, and immerse yourself in various literary forms and writing styles. I strive to make lessons interactive so that you feel valued and excited to share your perspectives and ideas.
My passion for literature and writing runs deep. I have explored countless genres, from classic novels to contemporary poetry, and from personal essays to engaging fiction. This rich experience allows me to introduce you to a diverse range of voices and styles, thereby broadening your literary horizons. My enthusiasm for the written word is contagious, and I’m eager to share that passion with you, helping you to discover the beauty of language and the power of storytelling.
Every student is unique, and I understand that the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to education doesn’t work for everyone. I pride myself on getting to know my students personally, understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and interests. I strive to tailor my instruction to accommodate different learning styles and to foster a supportive atmosphere where you feel comfortable taking risks. Whether you need extra help with grammar, want to refine your creative writing skills, or are eager to delve into literary analysis, I will adapt my teaching methods to suit your individual needs.
Writing is a powerful tool for self-expression, and I believe that everyone has a unique voice worth sharing. In my classroom, I aim to create a safe and supportive space for you to explore your thoughts and ideas. Through various writing exercises and workshops, you will learn how to articulate your viewpoints effectively and write confidently in your own style. My goal is to empower you to discover and develop your voice, equipping you with the skills to express yourself compellingly and authentically.
Literature and writing are not just about storytelling; they are also about critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation. As your teacher, I will challenge you to think deeply about the texts we read and the ideas we discuss. Together, we will explore themes, characters, and contexts, enhancing your ability to analyze and comprehend complex works. I will encourage you to ask questions, engage in debates, and explore different viewpoints—skills that are not only vital for understanding literature but are also essential for success in any academic or professional setting.
My dedication to your success extends beyond the classroom. I am here to support you, providing resources, feedback, and encouragement as you navigate your English and writing courses. Whether it’s preparing for exams, refining an essay, or embarking on a new writing project, my goal is to be a reliable resource who is genuinely invested in helping you achieve your goals. Your victories will be my victories, and I will celebrate each step you take towards improving your skills.
Choosing the right teacher can shape a positive and enriching educational experience. With my engaging teaching style, passion for literature and writing, personalized approach, and commitment to fostering your unique voice, I believe I can help you thrive in your English and writing journey. I am excited about the opportunity to support and inspire you, and I look forward to our adventures in language and storytelling together. Let’s embark on this journey to unlock the power of words and creativity!
