About David
I'm a working multimedia artist and photographer in Los Angeles with over a decade of teaching experience in both classroom settings and online. I believe everyone needs a creative outlet for self-expression, and photography is uniquely positioned as an art form available to the masses. In previous lives I've lived 20 years in Omaha, Nebraska, and 20 years in Phoenix, Arizona before making Los Angeles my new home.

My path to photographic arts began with integrating it into my life as a teenager, doing it as both a means of self expression and a fun social thing. Photography is unique in visual arts as most people have taken photos all their lives and seen benefits of good pictures, as opposed to drawing or other art forms that people feel they need an inherent skill level to achieve anything in.
Lesson plans start from integrating students' lives in photos, focusing on the fun and social/ adventure aspects of photography before heading into the technical/ compositional territory.
The philosophy behind this is, if students are enjoying and comfortable with a process, they'll be more willing to integrate the elements of art and principles of design down the line.
We start from simple concepts and design - emulating the works of Richard Avedon, for example - and build on more complex tools like lighting and editing in Adobe Lightroom. Each lesson ties to a famous photographer or cultural touchstone, like Nat Geo or LIFE Magazine, so students get a historical context to the work.
