About Andrew Nico
Hello! My name is Andrew Nico, but you can call me Andy for short. I am, in fact, from the Philippines, and I am more than excited to extend my reach to students from overseas through remote online tutoring for academic subjects such as science and maths. I am an experienced academic tutor and lecturer with over 10 years of teaching experience, specialising in Science, Maths, and English. I have worked with students from a wide range of levels—from young learners to IB and university students—and have helped hundreds achieve their academic goals. My journey as an academic tutor began in 2011 and has since included full-time roles at one of the Philippines’ most respected tutorial centres. As this tutorial centre mainly earns its bread and butter from test preparations for college entrance exams conducted by the top universities in my home country, I developed the innate ability to shift my discussions from going into an in-depth academic mode to sharing test-taking strategies, no matter the difficulty level of the subject, to gain more points and qualify for those universities. More recently, I have transitioned to freelance online tutoring, allowing me to reach a more diverse and international group of learners. My methodology is student-centred, built on the premise that each learner has unique strengths and areas for improvement. Maths and Science are rather heavy in problem-solving, so I always make sure that my student is involved throughout the solving process and that I give short quizzes to ensure the steps are followed. Outside of my work as a tutor, I love whipping up dishes whose recipes I find through various social media platforms. I also love to travel whenever I have the means. I have never been out of my home country, so travelling overseas is something I am including in my checklist. Taking care of animals is another thing I am really into, especially if it is a dog or a cat. So far, that's about me. I am looking forward to helping you out in your lessons in Science and Maths. Should you find my style quite a fit for you, please feel free to hit me a message, and we'll take it from there!

My teaching methodology depends on the student's learning needs, but it's mainly a combination of direct instruction and demonstration since science and maths lessons almost always involve problem-solving. I always make sure the student gets involved in the process so he/she develops problem-solving skills as if it is a matter of "muscle memory". I typically start off with a bit of a pep talk to allow the student to open up his/her learning struggles on his/her own regarding the subject matter. I then employ asking open-ended questions to identify the student's pain points. I always look for underlying prior lessons that might not have been addressed yet, and address these first before trying to address the main subject matter. I always make sure to determine how much the student has learned by providing a short quiz on the fly and checking how the student carried out each step in solving a problem. What sets me apart as a tutor is the fact that I have a student-centred tutorial style. I always make sure my session is tailored to the student's learning needs and that I address the student's pain points. My lessons are typically addressed to middle school-level to university-level students. I even handled a few IB students, all of whom obtained IB diplomas thereafter. I have read through the GCSE and A-level textbooks for the subjects that I am competent in, and I find that the content is more or less equivalent, with the topic discussions being more in-depth in A-levels than in IB. I believe I can handle the level of discussions in A-level chemistry and maths, as I have already tutored students for those subjects at the university level, and all my students were eventually exempted from taking the final exams in the subjects they were taking.
