About Mary
Hi, my name is Mary, and I’ve been playing piano for over 15 years. I spent four of those years competing and have won South Jersey piano competitions, as well as placed highly at the state level. Piano has been a constant part of my life, shaping not only my technical skills but also my discipline, work ethic, and appreciation for thoughtful, intentional practice. My experience as both a performer and a student strongly informs how I teach. I know what it’s like to work toward high standards, to feel the pressure of competition, and to want to keep pushing even when things are already going well. At the same time, I understand how frustrating it can be to feel stuck or unsure of how to improve. As a teacher, I aim to strike a balance between encouragement and challenge, helping students build confidence while continuing to grow. I take a professional, individualized approach to piano lessons, focusing on strong fundamentals, musicality, and sustainable progress. My goal is to create an environment where students feel supported, motivated, and proud of their development at the piano.

My approach is centered on building strong fundamentals, musicality, and confidence at the instrument. I adapt my teaching to each student’s goals, learning style, and prior experience, whether they are learning for enjoyment or working toward more structured performance goals. I emphasize understanding how and why music works, not just which notes to play.
A typical lesson includes technique work, repertoire, and focused practice strategies. I help students break pieces into manageable sections, develop efficient practice habits, and learn how to listen critically to their own playing. Lessons are structured but flexible, allowing room to adjust based on progress and interests.
What sets me apart is my balance of high standards and empathy. I understand both the challenges of feeling stuck and the drive to keep improving even when performing well. I aim to create a supportive environment that encourages steady growth, curiosity, and enjoyment of music.
Lessons are designed for beginner to intermediate pianists of all ages, including students preparing for recitals, auditions, or competitions, as well as those learning piano for personal enrichment.

Mary is an absolutely fantastic tutor with a bright, brilliant mind, a deep curiosity for knowledge, and a kind heart. I've known her for several years now, and she's the most academically dedicated person I've met. She has helped me to better understand concepts in a subject that wasn't my forte. Thanks to her, that subject became so much more understandable. I can 1000% recommend Mary as a tutor!
She makes sure she understands the student's unique learning style before delving into a topic. Doesn't rush through explanations, but is concise and well spoken. She tutored my sister throughout Algebra I and Algrebra II. I recommend her.
Mary was my writing tutor in my first two years of college. I came in having difficulty adjusting from structured high school writing to the freedom given in collegiate level writing. She helped me be both more concise and informative at the same time, all while improving on but not changing my tone. She's also used her experience as a pre-med student and biology major to help me with summer internship applications and research posters for poster conferences. With her help, I have found research positions at UPenn, CHOP, and more.
Mary has been an exemplary calculus tutor for my niece. She was struggling in grasping concepts to excel in the course. Mary was able to break down concepts and make them digestible for my niece. She ended up finishing the course with an A and I can’t thank her enough!
