About Tess
With 6 years of experience in coaching chess, my passion lies in helping students understand the game beyond the moves — to see its logic, psychology, and art. My teaching began informally through clubs and expanded into structured private instruction for a wide range of learners. I emphasise strategic thinking and disciplined play. While results are important, I aim to create learners who enjoy the intellectual challenge of chess. My lessons often include famous game studies, real match simulations, and breakdowns of legendary tactics from grandmasters to inspire critical reflection. Outside teaching, I actively play in online and over-the-board tournaments, keeping my skills sharp and up-to-date with current metagame shifts. This practical experience enhances the lessons, allowing me to share relevant strategies and insights that work in today’s competitive play.

These chess lessons are designed to develop tactical thinking, board awareness, and strategic planning. Each session progresses from core concepts—like piece development and control of the centre—to more advanced ideas such as positional play and sacrifice evaluation. Learners are encouraged to think multiple moves ahead and analyse every position with clarity. One central focus is opening principles. Students learn a range of common and practical openings that help establish control early on, allowing for smoother transitions into the mid-game. Tactics such as forks, pins, skewers, and discovered attacks are drilled consistently through puzzles and real-time play. This sharpens pattern recognition and response accuracy. Endgame techniques are taught with equal priority. Lessons cover king and pawn endings, minor piece coordination, and opposition strategies. Every concept is reinforced with practice games, scenario breakdowns, and interactive analysis. These sessions are about more than just winning — they build resilience, logic, and patience.
