About Tyler

A young and versatile individual from the quiet corner of Connecticut, bassist/multi-instrumentalist/composer Tyler Luppi is a sound pushing forward through jazz and the American tradition. Whether he be playing with friends from home, or with musicians from all over the world, Tyler makes music with a unique and passionate voice which draw an audience wherever he goes.

Tyler has performed as a leader and a sideman in several ensembles, including his jazz recording debut in 2011 with the “Orice Jenkins Trio” on the album Journals of a Teenage Chromaticist, and in 2013 with the Yoonmi Choi Trio. He can also be heard in the “Pranas Kentra Trio” on the 2014 album Vague Memoirs, and a record of his own compositions debuted in 2016,
Stories Listen.

He was a finalist in the 2013 Mechelen Jazz Competition in Belgium as a part of the “Sergej Avenesov Quartet” and was the winner of the 2014 Leiden Jazz Competition as part of the “Yoonmi Choi Trio.” In 2013, Tyler toured and recorded in Lithuania where the trio won the 2013 Gitarų šėlsmas in the jazz category.

Tyler Luppi had his first musical lessons for piano from his grandmother in North Haven, Connecticut at age 8. Later, he and his family moved to Woodstock, Connecticut where he picked up electric bass at age 13 and received lessons from Jim Perry for bass and piano. At age 17, Tyler picked up the Acoustic Bass and began studying with Gregg August, and graduated with a Bachelor's of Jazz in Groningen, Netherlands at the Prince Claus Conservatoire studying with Joris Teepe and Paul Berner.

Now, Tyler performs regularly throughout the United States. Luppi has played on stages all over including Boston, Hartford, New York City, Bimhuis, Lithuania, Germany, Belgium, Idstein Jazz Festival, and Swingin' Groningen Festival. Tyler’s main focuses performance wise are select improvisational performances including his current project, Lofi_Improv and a monthly VGM jam session he co-created and hosts at NYC-OS every first Friday of the month.

About the lesson

Tyler’s teaching philosophy involves learning the fundamentals of music, developing a repertoire of your instrument’s idiomatic pieces, and connecting those concepts with your own understanding of music and interests. To pursue and master these teaching philosophies in his lessons, you’ll practice the discipline of daily creation, no matter how small. Tyler helps instrumentalists, young and old, to learn the steps needed to achieve this on the piano, guitar, bass, and ukulele in a variety of genres. All in all, it is upward and onward when studying with Tyler- music has absolutely limitless potential!

Tyler Luppi is an exceptional piano tutor with true mastery of music theory and an impressive depth of experience. His teaching style strikes the perfect balance between passion and patience, creating an environment where learning feels both inspiring and approachable. Tyler places a strong emphasis on fundamentals, ensuring that every concept is fully understood rather than memorized, which builds lasting musical confidence.

Under his guidance, my piano skills progressed from a complete beginner level to a full grasp of not only how to play, but why certain notes, techniques, and musical choices work together to create feeling and expression. His ability to connect theory with emotion and technique is what truly sets him apart as a teacher.

Tyler’s many years of experience performing and playing music around the world clearly inform his instruction. He brings real-world musicianship into every lesson, offering insights that go far beyond standard piano teaching. I highly recommend Tyler Luppi to anyone seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable, and inspiring piano instructor who builds strong musicians from the ground up.
