About Helen
Hello! I'm Helen. I have a degree in Textiles from the University of Manchester and 10 years experience in the Fashion and Footwear Design industry for brands such as Lacoste, Reiss and Sophia Webster. I am a career changer and I began my teaching career at Holland Park School teaching Design and Technology to KS3 students and providing in lesson support to KS4 students, focusing on GCSE projects.
I believe that in in Design and Technology we learn by doing as well as reading. I'm here to guide that learning, leading to success through exams and practical work. Many factors are involved in well executed Design and Technology project, and understanding the "how" and "why" of design practices and production methods is crucial.
I also have experience mentoring through the charity GT Scholars and I am able to offer this service as well as, or within, my tutoring. Time spent working in the product industry coupled with my own career change has given me a lot of insight into personalised career selection. I am passionate about helping young people to pursue learning, and develop skills, within areas that will lead on to an fulfilling career. Ability and understanding within a subject can lead to both enjoyment and success. It's important to understand the "why" of learning. Linking subject knowledge, skills, and exam success to a range of careers can help young people to understand why they are learning, providing an enhanced level of motivation.
