About Sophie
Qualifications: PGCE Teacher Training (Oxford University); QTS; BA (Hons.) English Literature (Durham University) - Latin subsidiary. Experience: Farleigh School, Hampshire; Sherborne Preparatory School, Dorset; Canford School, Dorset; Alleyn’s School, Dulwich; extensive private tuition. I have been Head of Latin in 2 preparatory schools in the south of England. My aim as a tutor is to prepare my pupils so well that they approach examinations fearlessly and embrace them as an opportunity to demonstrate what they know. I aim to give my tutees a love of learning and Latin - and even rigorous assessment - that will last for the rest of their lives. As well as my school-based teaching, I have taken 11 private pupils through Latin Common Entrance (Levels 1, 2 and 3) and Scholarship, all of whom have achieved really good results (most grade A) and a place at their school of choice. Many of them came to me totally bewildered by the subject; all of them would tell you how much they had enjoyed the lessons by the end of the course. I have 19 years' experience teaching Latin at leading preparatory and public schools in the south of England. I have extensive knowledge of the transfer process at 13+, having held the role of prep school Director of Studies which involved liaising with senior schools and helping children prepare for interviews as well as overseeing their preparation for Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations in all subjects as well as teaching my own. I have prepared scholarship candidates for Eton; Harrow; Winchester; Marlborough; Wellington; Charterhouse; St. Mary’s, Ascot; Cheltenham Ladies’ College and many other public schools. I also have extensive experience of teaching children with learning support needs and was Head of Learning Support at a prep school for five years. I use Skype and GoogleDocs to deliver my lessons, so there is no cost involved and no travelling time to and from class. I can teach you wherever you happen to be in the world, as long as you have a decent internet connection! I usually divide my lessons into three twenty-minute segments to make up the hour slot: vocabulary review; grammar point under scrutiny; translation / past paper practice. I specialise in unknotting the difficulties that can so easily occur when Latin is taught in larger classes, and then moving forward through the syllabus at a pace that suits the individual. My pupils, without exception, obtain really good results in their exams and are always very proud of what they have achieved. I make them feel good about the progress they are making by breaking down the curriculum into manageable sections, smoothing out any problem areas and reminding pupils frequently on how far they have come to boost their confidence.

Perfect! Sophie has been teaching my 10year daughter Latin over lockdown.
Latin is new to my daughter, I wanted her to start learning something new during this lockdown.
She will begin to learn Latin as part of her curriculum at senior school in September, this has certainly given her a head start.
My daughter has loved every minute of it, and I am amazed with how much has been covered.
Sophie is extremely engaging and you can tell she’s experienced in what she is offering.

Our son was taught Latin by Sophie in Year 7&8, she also helped him individually to improve his Latin in preparation for a scholarship exam. Sophie brought this subject to life for him and he went onto do the GCSE and achieved an A*. He is now 20 and we still rely on him for the Latin answers in the Times crossword! Some teachers who teach your children are special people indeed, Sophie is one of those. Couldn’t recommend her enough, and now she is a mother I think she will bring even more to the table.
Sophie taught both of my boys english and latin. She is an amazing teacher, inspiring confidence and creativity. They both miss her terribly as their teacher. Not only is she a great teacher but she is also a lovely person whom the children like to work with which is crucial!
