About Stephanie
I have been working the last 4 years both inside and outside of schools with students at the middle grade, secondary, and college level. My core teaching values center around supporting students to reach higher levels of excellence in their academic careers. Prior to working in the education field, I held a job as Chemist for several years, which has helped me to better guide and support students who may be looking to pursue a career in the sciences. I see education as a pathway to reaching future career goals, and my approach to tutoring has always been rooted in the practical application of the subject matter. Whatever a student's goal may be in their coursework, I always look to be a support for them in achieving that goal.
I love getting to know my students. Each student is unique and learns differently, meaning there is no one right way to learn. I enjoy customizing and tailoring every students learning experience to them and their specific learning needs. This can be challenging at times, but it is crucial to helping students in building their knowledge. I find that tutoring offers students this unique perosonalized approach to learning that can not always be acheived inside a school classroom.
My background is in Chemistry. I graduated from Dominican University with a degree in BioChemistry. I worked for several years as a Chemist before starting my career in Education. This gives me a "real-world" understanding of practical chemistry that is necessary for anyone looking to work in the sciences. I have recently completed my Master's degree in the Art of Teaching in Secondary Education, and I am certified specifically as a Physical Science/Chemistry educator.
I have previously worked as a professional math tutor for a non-for-profit organization. In this position, I worked with students in a small group environment in which my role was to drive academic success and help students gain confidence in mathematical abilities at the 9th and 10th grade levels. I planned personalized lessons for students in the subjects courses of Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and PreCalculus in order to help support them in any of the topics.
Additionally, I have been working as a professional tutor at the college level for the past 2 years. I have worked for this college as tutor who takes walk-in students needing immediate help, as a tutor with regularly scheduled appointments for students that want consistent support, and lastly as a support inside the classroom for specific math courses. The college I work for has a unique program for select math courses that allows for tutors to be inside the classroom working side-by-side with professors to support students.

I usually like to build repoire and get to know my students first...who they are, what they are interested in, what their academic goals are, what challenges or struggles they are facing, and what their strengths are inside and outside of classroom. After learning about a student, I like to begin working in whatever subject matter they are seeking help with, while tailoring the learning experience to them along the way.
I often ask questions to check for understanding during lessons and encourage students to ask me questions in order to best acheive a collaborative learning experience. I ultimately aim for students to build a level of comfort where the feel safe to make mistakes and to push themselves further in their learning.
