About Gurmit K
I started my full-time tutoring journey in 2001. I taught mostly English & Math and some Science to upper primary students. When my oldest daughter was in Pri 6 in 2011, she shared that she wished to score above 90% in the PSLE Science exam. After her mid year exam in May, (where she scored 78%) I looked through her open-ended answers. I was puzzled as to why she was not scoring the full marks for questions even though her answers seemed conceptually correct to me. I reached out to her Science schoolteacher and he clarified the importance of using relevant keywords and how marks were allocated for each part of the answer. During the June holidays, I analyzed past year school exam papers and the model answers, thereby gaining clarity in what was required for acing open-ended answers. I realized the more challenging questions were those based on experiments and students were not confident in applying such process skills. I also identified commonly tested concepts and grouped topical questions from exam papers for focused practice. Through this system, my daughter improved her understanding of how to answer questions ‘correctly’. She achieved her aim of scoring A* (equivalent to AL1 today) for her PSLE Science exam. Since then, I've taught these techniques to hundreds of students and helped them improve their scores in Science exams.

I have a structured approach to teaching Science for primary 3 to 6 students.
1. understand content and identify key ideas
2. analyze questions' requirements
3. apply key concepts using relevant keywords to answer questions
The first 2 steps help in both multiple choice & open-ended questions. Step 3 requires more guidance for attempting open-ended questions. Relevant notes & worksheets will be provided.
