About Isaac

I am a composer and educator originally from Minnesota currently living in New York. I studied composition and music theory at New England Conservatory in Boston, where I gained a variety of skills in music and teaching. While at NEC, I also worked as a Hebrew School teacher for kids ages 9-12, a Resident Assistant for college students, a composition and English teacher to high schoolers in China, as a summer camp counselor for teenagers on the Asperger's-Autism spectrum, and as a music director orchestrating, conducting, and rehearsing musicals in Hebrew and teaching instrumental lessons. My experience as a multi-instrumentalist and multi-genre musician has allowed me to draw connections between a variety of genres and practices, and my teaching experience has given me the tools to help students from all ages and backgrounds cultivate technical skills and artistic confidence.

My teaching style is underpinned by the belief that students gain the most when they feel supported and personally motivated. I work to get to know the student's personal interests and goals, and then I develop a curriculum that incorporates them with a rigorous focus on developing the technical skills required. I prefer a discussion to a lecture; instead of just imparting concepts, I am interested in students internalizing important points through conversation about their work, progress, and the new topics we will cover in each lesson. Additionally, I am able to be very schedule-oriented: if a specific test or application is coming up, I will make sure to keep the student on track so specific goals are achieved. My top priority is that my students feel heard and respected throughout the learning process.

I started teaching when I was still in high school. I taught music at a shelter for Native American youth experiencing homelessness, and I taught music theory and was a piano accompanist at a music school in Minneapolis. Since then, I have taught music at workshops in Chicago, to private students in China and the US, at a Jewish summer camp in Wisconsin, and at a Hebrew school in Boston.

I hold a Bachelor's Degree from New England Conservatory in Composition. At New England Conservatory, I studied compostion, as well as music theory, keyboard skills, music history, vocal performance, and literature. I was also involved with music workshops at Harvard University, in Chicago at the People's Music School, at at Banff, in Canada.
