About Tereiti

My name is Tereiti Pohatu I have a passion and love for Te Reo Maori growing up I was immersed in the language spoke Maori at home and just enjoyed listening to my elders speaking the language in Kohanga in kura at our marae and in different wananga.

About the lesson

Ka pai — awesome! Since you’re focused on Māori learners or tutoring in te ao Māori contexts, here’s a tailored personal tutoring approach that blends effective teaching with Māori values, language, and cultural practices.

---

Best Personal Approach to Māori Tutoring

1. Whakawhanaungatanga — Build the Relationship First

Everything starts with connection.
Before diving into lessons, take time to establish who you both are and where you come from.

Share a little about your whakapapa, iwi/hapū, or where you call home.

Ask about your student’s background, interests, and dreams.

Begin with karakia or mihimihi if appropriate — it creates a respectful learning space.

Example:

> “Kia ora e hoa — before we start, tell me something you really enjoy learning about.”

---

2. Ako — Learn Together

In Māori values, teaching and learning are reciprocal.

Let your student see you as a learning partner, not just a teacher.

Be open to learning from them — their reo, local tikanga, or way of thinking.

Use ako moments: share stories, examples, or pūrākau that connect to the lesson.

Example:

> When teaching literacy, use local Māori stories, whakataukī, or waiata lyrics as reading material.

---

3. Manaakitanga — Create a Safe, Supportive Space

Your student should feel respected, valued, and uplifted.

Speak positively, never shame mistakes.

Celebrate effort — “Ka mau te wehi! Kei te piki haere koe.”

Offer gentle corrections through modelling, not criticism.

🪶 Example:

> “Āe, tika ana tō whakaaro — he iti noa te hapa, kia whakamātau anō tāua.”

---

4. Kotahitanga — Set Shared Goals

Make sure both of you understand the purpose of your sessions.

Ask: “He aha tō whāinga? What’s your goal for learning this?”

Write down clear, achievable steps together.

Revisit those goals every few sessions to celebrate progress.

---

5. Whakapapa-Based Learning

Tie lessons back to identity and connection.

Use place-based learning — link maths, reading, or science to their local environment or iwi stories.

If teaching te reo Māori, use kupu related to their whānau, whenua, and daily life first.

Example:

> Teaching fractions? Use examples from cooking kai, sharing kai, or weaving patterns.

---

6. Rangatiratanga — Empower the Learner

Encourage independence and pride in learning.

Let them choose topics sometimes.

Ask for their feedback: “He pai tēnei momo ako ki a koe?”

Help them reflect on what they’ve learned — build self-belief and confidence.

---

7. Kaitiakitanga — Give Back to the Community

Where possible, connect learning to community or whānau benefit.

Encourage them to share what they’ve learned with others.

If teaching reo, suggest practising with kuia, koroua, or tamariki at home.

---

Example Tutoring Session Flow

(60-minute session)

1. Karakia / Mihimihi (5 mins) – centre yourselves

2. Warm-up kōrero (5 mins) – casual check-in

3. Main learning focus (30 mins) – skill-based or content-based lesson

4. Whakaaro & reflection (10 mins) – student explains what they learned

5. Karakia whakamutunga / planning for next session
