About Alex
As a pianist, trombonist and conductor, I have been studying music for the majority of my life to some degree. In terms of music theory, I began learning about theory in the same circumstances as many: to continue working through my practical exams. I found myself enjoying theory so much, that I continued to study it beyond the regular Grade 5 level. I currently work in a school, where I run a weekly music theory club. Here, I assist students of a range of ages and ability, whether it is teaching them whole new concepts, or simply refining their pre-existing knowledge.

My music theory lessons vary from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the level of the student. The main aim with my students is always to pass their Grade 5 theory exam, so I usually begin our lessons by showing them a theory paper, with the grade depending on their practical ability and current confidence with theory. From there, we will quickly discover the areas which need learning or reinforcing, and will focus on them, before returning to the exam-style questions and hopefully progressing to a higher grade, as soon as knowledge is consolidated.
