About Josh

My name is Joshua Docking, and I am a recent graduate of Colgate University, New York, USA, with a BA in Japanese and Fine Art. I am the recipient of multiple distinctions in my work, such as a Dean's Award with Distinction in February 2021, endowed university scholarships on behalf of the Brooks family across the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 academic years, Colgate University Career Services' prestigious Summer Funding award for the summer of 2023, and the Colgate University Language Council's prestigious Summer Language Fellowship for the summer of 2024. I have been studying Japanese intensively for the past 4½ years, visited Japan for a month on the Japan-America Student Conference in August 2023, and for 3 weeks on an intensive language course in July 2024. Having now finished both of the Genki I and II 3rd Edition textbooks, along with considerable progress in the Tobira textbook and my experience of immersive language learning across Japan, I wish to share my accumulated knowledge in order to help new Japanese students in their language acquisition.

About the lesson

Having recently graduated from university in the United States, I have experienced both the US university (Japanese) and UK GCSE/A-Level (Spanish) methods of language teaching. Additionally, I have experienced immersive language learning and practice via my participation as a US delegate of the 75th Japan-America Student Conference in August 2023, along with my enrolment in a three-week Japanese immersive language and culture course in Nagoya in July 2024. I plan to take these methods into consideration as I provide supplemental tutoring to beginner Japanese students. Lessons will typically last between 1-2 hrs depending on student preference. Lessons will likely follow up from student's own studies if applicable, in order to keep Japanese knowledge fresh in the memory and prepare for the next academic year of Japanese studies. My lessons will be aimed towards beginner Japanese students, primarily those with at least a little experience learning Japanese, and those who wish to practise their Japanese skills with a fellow student outside of term time.

I have often found myself as a peer to Joshua and the words I find that come to mind is 'pure excellence'. Never before have I met some one so passionate about the Japanese language and culture simultaneasly as he seeks to learn and immerse himself into the listed. Joshua often dedicates most of his time to his studies surrounding Japanese and works to understand everything even if it is on a highler level not yet arrived at within curriculum. He also spends his time outside of an academic setting continually learning about Japanese culture and becoming exposed to the social aspects of society within Japan. Not to mention, how caring and attentive he is to detail and to others as an individual. This excellent scholar and person would make a superb tutor for anyone seeking guidance in not only Japanese but for any sector of study.

I offer in-person sessions to students living in Coventry and its surrounding areas, including Bedworth, Nuneaton, and Warwick, as long as the desired location is accessible by public bus routes. In such cases, sessions are to be held in a public place such as a library or cafe, and a supplemental fee of £6 per session will be charged to cover travel costs. Other than this, I offer remote sessions via the student's preferred video conferencing software (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc), for which no additional fee will be charged.
