I believe that to start speaking a foreign language correctly, it is essential to understand cultural aspects and have a sense of the language. Many words have different "nuances," and it is crucial to consider the correct conveyance of meaning. I will try to briefly explain what I mean. Let's take, for example, the word "душа" – "soul." In Russian culture, the concept of "душа" has a broader meaning, including the emotional and inner essence of a person, whereas "soul" in English is often used exclusively in a religious and spiritual context. For instance, I practise yoga, and we often use the word "soul" in classes, but in this case, it is more like "spirit" rather than "soul." It is extremely important to convey the meaning correctly. Or take the word "тоска." Primarily, "тоска," equivalent to the English "melancholy," in Russian can mean a feeling of nostalgia, sadness, and loss, whereas the English "melancholy" more often implies a sense of gloom or sorrow. There is also the word "splin," but in Russian, it has a more superficial meaning, something like "blues." Another interesting example is the word "Родина," which translates to "homeland" in English. In Russian, this word signifies not only the place where a person was born but also a cultural, historical, and emotional attachment to one's country. Whereas "homeland" in English might primarily denote a geographic territory. The English language also has the term "motherland," but it is rather rare and more characteristic of other European cultures. Some phrases cannot be translated literally into English. For example, it is challenging to translate "Душевно посидели" or simply "Он такой душевный." In these cases, it is more appropriate to use the word "heartfelt." However, the phrase "heartfelt condolences" cannot be translated to Russian as "душевные соболезнования." Conversely, "heartfelt family dinner" can be translated as "душевный семейный ужин." The word "consciousness," for example, can be translated as "совесть" and as "сознание," "понимание," but in Russian, "совесть" has a slightly different, more soulful, deep, and less logical subtext. For instance, "его мучает совесть что душа болит" is quite challenging to translate without losing the depth of meaning. I would be very interested to hear your opinion.
