About Jessica

Hi, I’m Jess!

I didn’t always find Maths easy. I struggled at school and was once told by a teacher to “manage my expectations” and not aim too high when choosing a degree.

One brilliant tutor changed that. Once Maths was explained in a way that made sense to me, everything shifted. I went on to study Maths and Further Maths at A-Level and later gained a First Class degree in Aerospace Engineering.

That experience is a big part of why I tutor. I know how much difference the right tutor can make when someone is stuck. I love seeing the point when something clicks and a student starts trusting their own ability rather than assuming they are simply “bad at Maths”.

I started my career in engineering, later worked in gaming and now run my own business. I tutor alongside that work because I like being able to give someone else the kind of support that made such a difference to me.

Outside work, I love travelling and anything hands-on. I’ve visited more than 30 countries, slept next to elephants, swam with turtles and climbed volcanoes. At home I’m usually building, fixing or making something.

My teaching style is informal, energetic and adaptable. The teaching should fit the student, not the other way round.

Depending on the student, we might use worked examples, visual aids, practical problems or assistive technology. If sitting at a desk is getting in the way, we might change the setting or even throw a ball around while we work.

Learning works better when the student is doing the Maths, not watching me do it. We work through problems together, talk through their reasoning and gradually reduce the amount of help they need.

When a student is stuck, the missing piece is often an earlier topic. I like to step back, find the gap and make sure the foundations are solid before moving on.

I work with all kinds of students including those who:

* have gaps in their knowledge or have missed lessons
* need concepts explained differently from the way they are taught at school
* want support with current schoolwork
* are preparing for SATs, GCSE or A-Level exams
* have dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD/ADD or autism

I have professional tutoring experience and teach in person and online. I cover AQA, OCR and Edexcel and use the student's current school materials where useful.

Typical lessons are 45 minutes for KS2, 60 minutes for KS3 and GCSE, and 90 minutes for A-Level.
