About Daniel
While at university, I tutored for 8 years both privately and as a teaching assistant for both A-level equivalents and undergraduates studying maths and engineering. I have since been working as a telecommunication consultant, designing and deploying communication equipment around the world.
My job has taught me the importance and the power to transform inherent in a solid grasp of maths and sciences. It has also taken me to developing countries with a large uneducated populace whose quality of life is undermined by scientific illiteracy. Alarmed by the recent decline in scientific achievement in this country’s education system, I have lately gone back to tutoring, as my personal contribution to helping this country maintain its technological and scientific leadership in the world.

My approach to maths is pragmatic, as it’s a tool I use daily to solve problems effectively. Understanding the practical reasons for each module in the maths curriculum provides me with a powerful teaching and motivational tool, because pupils are naturally curious and are trying to make sense of the world. The trick is simply to point out the connection to their homework, instantly transforming a boring exercise into a fascinating challenge: Which route is faster? Which mortgage is better? Which medical treatment is more efficacious and less dangerous? How does a GPS know where you are? And a mobile phone? How does the space probe find Mars? There is nothing like these endless wonders and daily dilemmas to transform an otherwise boring lesson into an exciting and rewarding one.
