About Steve
Because I have taught math for many years I'm able quickly assess the strengths and areas for improvement with my new students.
I love helping my students gain confidence as they learn easily solve problems that used to seem very difficult.
I worked in technology Marketing and Sales for 20 years then changed professions mid-life to become a teacher. For 20 years I taught in a mix of small and large school systems before retiring in 2017.
Helping students gain mastery and achieve self-confidence is what gets me most excited about tutoring!
I have held a Texas Teaching certificate for Secondary Math since 1997. During that time I have also been certified in Technology Applications.

I've found it helps to work on an assignment the student needs to complete soon. Right away I can begin to see strengths as well as areas for improvement.
I like to have the student bring quizzes and tests that have been handed back so we can through them together. I usually contact the students math teacher to get their perspective.
Every semester I work with a mix of students that range from regular ed to PreAP and AP.
You must be willing to be honest about areas of strength and weakness, don't try to fool your tutor, they'll figure it out anyway!
Hire someone who has a lot of classroom teaching experience in the subject - they will know what's expected and they know the curriculum.
I began working with an Algebra 1 student who was failing about half-way through the course. We worked together every week and by the end of the class they made an A!

We are so grateful to have found Steve to tutor our 3 teenagers. He has been amazing with scheduling and communication. Our kids have increased their math grade by approximately 10 points. The kids enjoy their sessions and have a complete new attitude about math after working with Steve.

Steve tutored me for Pre-AP GT Geometry. He helped me learn concepts and did not just give me answers. I am a visual learner and he made diagrams to help me see the process. He improved my test scores and I got an A in the class. I highly recommend Steve!
Mr. Johnson is an amazing tutor. He has helped our daughter gain confidence and that alone is worth it. The one on one interaction is beyond needed as we are doing online school.
