About Maggie

Games, stories, and activities are at the forefront of our class structure! I don't just want kids to learn, I want them to ENJOY learning. A typical session with me starts off with a warm-up to ease the student into "work mode" then we introduce the concept of the day and finally, we finish up with a game or project that highlights the topic(s) we just learned. I understand that learning can often be intimidating, so I try to simultaneously build students' academic skills while instilling a sense of pride and joy in their work.

Honestly, I feel I have learned more from my students as a teacher than I have in any other job I've undertaken. Their enthusiasm, imagination, and natural curiosity give way to new possibilities each and every lesson. I enjoy watching my students grow and find their likes and dislikes, problem-solving skills, and learn to embrace how they learn throughout our lessons!

I have always loved working with children and enjoyed interacting with them during my time as a nanny, but I wanted to become a larger mentor in kids' lives so I decided to transition to teaching. I fell in love with watching students grow not only emotionally and socially, but also intellectually. Children are naturally curious and inventive and I encourage my students to dive deep into these traits.

I have 5+ years of professional tutoring and teaching experience and a bachelor's degree from UCLA in Theatre. My artist's background allows me to bring in games and stories that make kids feel like they aren't even learning during our class. I also have worked for learning centers and tutoring services across Los Angeles County for the past 3 years, homeschooling and tutoring children ages 3-16.

A typical process for a new student includes an initial getting-to-know-you period in which I give the student a learning style assessment, learn where they feel confident and where they feel more doubtful, as well as what they like to do outside of school. I think connecting material to non-school-related activities allows the student to learn better and makes learning more impactful for them. I understand that not all teaching approaches work for all children, so I strive to help them understand in the way they know how then apply that knowledge to other modalities.

In the past few years, I've worked primarily with elementary school kids on basic math and science concepts, as well as older high school and college-aged students who want to deepen their writing skills. For me, a typical session always begins with a warm-up which allows students to transition into "work mode." I think it is important to provide time for a student to get to know their teacher and vice-versa to create a safe, but challenging learning environment. I am very comfortable working with kids who are kinesthetic learners as well as those who struggle with ADD/ADHD. I find taking a hands-on approach to learning allows kids to figure out the answers themselves which leads to greater retention.

Make sure the teacher doesn't use a one-size-fits-all method. Kids learn in different ways at different paces -- meet them where they are at and allow them to show YOU how to teach them.

I had a 3rd-grade student who was extremely bright but was falling behind in math. His parents came to me for extra tutoring services because he wasn't grasping concepts, especially over zoom-school. Though we were still online, we worked together for 2 years and not only did his math skills improve, but his confidence in the class started to soar. He became a student who rose his hand to answer rather than hide in the back of the classroom. He started to get excited about learning math and his grades went from C's to A's. In fact, at the end of his 4th-grade year, he was already tackling 5th-grade math concepts! I was most excited by his attitude shift from when he first came to me versus when he left -- he no longer felt insecure or hesitant about his skills, and that was an incredible progression to see.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is my learning styles (Visual, auditory, kinesthetic)

What activities does my child like to do that we could bring into the classroom?

How many breaks does my child need in a 1-hour session?

What teachers have my child connected to in the past? What were they like?

Are my actual goals for my child? (Is it to raise their grade, or to actually have them understand and enjoy reading/writing/etc.?)

What kind of improvement do you expect by the end of 6 months?
