About Amanda
At Writers Block we focus on helping you understand and build the skills to be an effective writer. Writing is an art form that can be refined and finely tuned so that you can get your message across in a clear, consicise, and proficient manner. Writing is a critical skill that can be utilized in any industry - from resume writing, persuasive writing, analytical composition, creative output, and so much more. We don't just teach you the tools, we explain their significance as well!
We are all different and unique, making for a world of individuals with extradorinary ideas and thoughts that lead to the pioneering of new knowledge. Come learn how to take those thoughts, turn them into words and organize them so you can share them with others in a compelling manner!
I started with helping my friends in college with their papers. I would read their drafts and edit them with specific notes on what they should consider changing for their next draft. From there, I started volunteering for an after school program for elementary school students where I tutored math and English. To this day, I help others with resume and cover letter writing.
Since a young age writing was the only creative skill I had and enjoyed! I had built an impressive lexicon at a surprisingly young age from constantly reading all sorts of things - from fiction novels to graphic novels to books that were above my reading comprehension level at the time and all the way down to a random instruction manual I'd find lying around; if it was in reach, I was reading it. I truly believe reading and writing go hand in hand. In order to be good in one you have to be well versed in the other. By the time I was in my college years pursuing my Bachelors in cognitive science with the goal of pursuing a career in pharmaceutical sciences, which was my passion, I found that fulfilling the mandatory lower and upper division writing courses were just as fun and had me engaged! I was for the first time putting names to tools I had already been using for years in my work, but didn't know there were names for them or why it worked in my essays. I received solid A's in every single writing course I took, which all varied in teaching the different writing styles known at the college level. To this day I find myself enjoying the field of writing just as enjoyable as when I was a child. This tool has served me well in different areas of my life and I'm excited to share them with you!

At Writers Block, we want you to be excited and motivated to produce good work in a TIMELY manner. In order to ensure the student is learning all the right skills at a speedy rate I like to identify what the student's "big picture" goals are. Are they trying to boost their GPA, write a cover letter for the first time, want to dabble in a new creative outlet through poetry - the list is endless. Once we have the big picture, I like to ask what their thoughts are of their current writing skills and where they currently stand in the process of achieving this goal. (No point in going too in depth on something that's already understood, am I right?) With this roadmap now set in place we can start working on discussing what tools are needed to produce the end product in a compelling manner. As we work through the different areas of the essay we can discuss how to incorporate the students personal writing style so it truly sounds like something they have created and conveyed in their own unique way!
I have worked with elementary school students as young as third grade level up to university level writing. Students writing needs I have encountered extend from basic grammar rules, creative writing styles, argumentive and persuasive works, research based papers and even lab writeups (think your General Chemistry lab writeups).
