About Ely
I am an Applied Physics Ph.D. student with a bachelors in Physics from Reed College. At Reed I tutored and graded for physics and math classes at both the college and high school level. I have served as a TA at Northwestern for both Physics and Engineering classes. I also completed a teaching fellowship in the summer of 2017 working in geometry classrooms with middle school students. I have had dozens of private clients over the past ten years and experience working with students of all ages and ability levels.
My goal is to present math and science content in a friendly, relaxed environment where you can feel comfortable with where you are at and have the confidence that you will improve. I believe that everyone can be a "math person," and yes, that includes you!

I look to build a student's intuitive knowledge in mathematics. It's important to me that students know how to explain technical concepts and the problem solving process in everyday language because that demonstrates true understanding. I typically walk a student through a problem using a series of questions to help them understand what decisions to make when working on a difficult problem.
I use a digital whiteboard that the student can interact with in real time so that we can work through problems together, and you will receive a copy of all the notes we take in a PDF after the lesson. Our lesson will typically start with reviewing definitions and key relations between concepts in common language, maybe with a few analogies. Then I might talk you through how I would solve a practice problem or two, followed by a chance for you to do some problems on your own with me following along to guide you.
I offer all of my students free emergency homework help through text and email outside of lesson hours! Sometimes things that make sense the first time aren't always so clear the second, so I'm happy to guide you outside of our lesson times.
