The great thing about teaching privately is that the teaching is personalised and tailored. Face-to-face allows me to observe and truly diagnose problems and issues.

Personalised teaching means that students advance rapidly and most are surprised how easy the subject is when the teaching is geared to their actual specific problems and difficulties

About the lesson

In a maths class, one student's zero is much the same as any other student's. Watching carefully it becomes clear exactly how errors arise and that those zeros have frequently occurred in different ways; poor writing, poor layout, sweet surrender, guessing and a host of other very different, distinctive and personal errors. A class teacher is totally unable to diagnose a teaching and learning issue in this way.

Maths ability has two components: knowing the appropriate method and implementing that method. The focus of teaching and students is the first of these ignoring the implementation - at GCSE for the majority of students between 15% and 25% of their mistakes are in the implementation. Good method and approach such that implementation mistakes are not made is an inherent part of my teaching.

In maths, private teaching allows me to focus on the absolute key areas and provide robust methods for solutions and show students links across the subject e.g. relating algebra and graphical interpretation, division and fractions and many more. This luxury is not available to the classroom teacher who is always under time pressure and must continue at the pace of the majority.
