About Luke

I am currently entering my third year at the University of Vermont, and while mathematics is not my primary area of study, I have substantial experience with several different areas of math, having taken 4 different calculus courses, 3 different algebra courses, and a statistics course all within the last 6 years.

While I may lack the professional teaching experience of my peers, I do have one distinct advantage: I know what it's like to be a math student in a modern classroom. I know how fast math classes move in 2023 and just how much of a need there is for certain students to have one-on-one instruction to fill in the gaps that are often created by this type of environment. I have personally experienced what study techniques work in both in-person and remote math classes, and I hope to share what I have learned with you and much more.

About the lesson

My sessions are mostly geared toward students in grades K-12 in classes including, but not limited to, Algebra I, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Statistics.

Like any skill, you can only build confidence through repetition, so I try to stay away from lecturing students on their respective topics during my sessions (though I will give mini-lessons when necessary). Students having trouble with classwork and homework problems will receive one-on-one guidance and will eventually, through practice, learn and understand procedurally what to do. If you have work you want to do during the session, bring it on over and we’ll tackle it together! If not, that’s okay too. I would ask that if there is a certain topic you want to discuss but you have no study materials, please notify me at least 24 hours in advance so I can prepare some material for the session.

NOTE: If you are a statistics student, please bring a TI-84 or other graphing calculator (digital or online) to sessions if possible.

Great job today! I feel like you have a very good grasp of the material. All you need to remember for straight line motion is the relationship between position, velocity, and acceleration, and just know that the derivative of a function is the rate of change.
