About JONATHAN
I am a passionate math educator with a bachelor's degree from Brandeis University in mathematics, philosophy, and Hebrew language and literature, and a master's degree from Duke University in teaching secondary mathematics. I have worked as a teacher for six years in large, diverse public schools, and before that I worked as a private tutor for 6 years. My entire professional life has been dedicated to finding ways to communicate mathematics effectively to students. I am incredibly passionate about this work, and I believe that every student deserves to find the joy in pursuit of mathematics that I do. Working with me you can trust that I will always do everything that I can to support your growth in math, whatever that looks like. If you want to pursue a PhD in math, I can help you on your way. I have taught courses from integrated math 1 (roughly an algebra 1 equivalent) through a multivariable calculus course I pioneered targeted to high school students. Because of my experience at all levels of the vertical alignment of high school math, I know what students need to be ready for. I will not simply prepare students to complete current assignments, but to excel in the courses that follow. I am passionate about giving students the foundational skills to go as far in mathematics as their passion demands.
My lessons will breathe life into the material, showing not only what students are expected to do, but why it works and what it means. Through my lessons students will see math less as a series of unrelated algorithms to be followed without question, but as a collection of logical rules whose interactions are to be explored and played with! Students should be able to ask why a process works, or why their intuitive approach might not be appropriate, and be answered in detail. I will give those answers, so that students will come out of my lessons with a deeper, richer understanding of the content covered.
