About Valentin

I have a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles. I was a math tutor for East Los Angeles College, California State University, Los Angeles, and Legacy LA Youth Center during my undergraduate years. At all these institutions I had the opportunity to work with students from the surrounding communities such as East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, Ramona Gardens and Montebello.

For seven years, I served the students at East Los Angeles College as a Math Tutor at the Learning Assistance Center, where I would work one-on-one and in small groups with more than 20 students on college-level mathematics and science coursework. As an ELAC alumnus who was born and raised in East Los Angeles, I understand the backgrounds many of these students come from because I share them, and that shared context has consistently helped me build trust with students quickly and meet them where they are.

I was also the assigned Supplemental Instructor for East Los Angeles College's Latina Completion Transfer Academy. This is a program that supports non-traditional students, including those returning to school after time away and students raising families while enrolled. Designing lesson plans and structured sessions for this population taught me how to adapt instruction for students balancing coursework against significant outside responsibilities, a skill I expect to be valuable given the range of students LACCD colleges serve.

I also served the students at California State University, Los Angeles as a Mathematics Supplemental Instructor for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), which supports first-generation college students. Working with this population reinforced my ability to build confidence in students who are often navigating college on their own.

My tutoring experience also extends beyond the college level. As a Math and Science Tutor at Legacy LA, I supported K-12 students throughout Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, and Lincoln Heights, where I provided one-on-one and group instruction in math and chemistry for students from underrepresented communities. That experience showed me I can meet students effectively at any level, from middle and high school foundations through college-level coursework and adjust my approach to wherever a student is starting from.

I was born and raised in East Los Angeles and was a first-generation college student myself, so I was able to empathize with the struggles and challenges my students were facing. I understood that some students would be too afraid or shy to ask questions so I made sure that my students would feel 100% comfortable around me and reassure them that they can ask me anything. I understood that some students had very little time to study because some worked 3 jobs (like I did at some point), had kids, or had other obligations.
